The Protected Marine Area is entirely part of the territory of Alghero.The Porto Conte Gulf (the “port of nymphs” as it was called by the ancient Romans) is characterized by impervious and inaccessibile stretches, that preserve invaluable Wild Flora and Fauna resources. There are calcareous  deposits partially composed of karst cliffs and with the widest emerged and submerged sea caves of the Mediterranean area. The most famous is the Nettuno Cave, 2500 metres wide, that offers a striking view with the salt lake inside it.
