The island, which covers a surface area of 51 km², faces the north-west tip of Sardinia and since 31st December 1997 has to all effects become a national park to protect the landscape, wildlife and environment. Besides its splendid sea and dreamy landscapes (inlets, sheer drops into the acean and spectacular coves), the island boasts lush Mediterranean vegetation and a rich avifauna. There are also many pairs of moufflons and wild boar and small herd of white donkeys. The marine life is also varied and extensive. Even the history of the island is fascinating. In the middle Ages it was the site of Camaldolite Monastery. Then it was virtually left to its own devices until the first settlements in last century, but these were soon ousted in favour of a sanatorium and a prison no longer exists, and at last the full beauty of the island can be discovered.
