 | The highest village in Sardinia stands behind the massif of Gennargentu at a height of 1000 metres a.s.l. The surrounding natural environment is the true rich resource of this area with its countless valleys, mountains, waterfalls and centuries-old forests. During the winter, the village itself and the whole area is often covered in snow, a phenomenon which attracts winter sports enthusiasts from all over Sardinia. Monte Spada is equipped with a ski-lift at 1594 metres a.s.l. and is the most famous ski location together with the “Bruncu Spina” peak (1829 metres), which is second in height only to Punta La Marmora (1834 metres). |

 | Fonni, however, is not only nature. The area has a wealth of evidence of an historical kind, with its menhir, “domus de janas” and “tombe dei giganti”. On the slopes to the north and east of the village as many as 18 nuraghic villages have been discovered, with over 1000 huts; 45 nuraghi, including 4 with a corridor, 25 “tombe dei giganti” and 55 “domus de janas”. Furthermore, recent excavations have brought to light the remains of three places of worship, integrated into a residential settlement, which developed to cover an area of about 7 hectares along the banks of the Rio Gremanu and dating back to the Middle Bronze Age (15th-14th centuries B.C.).
It is also worth stopping to have a look at the village itself. The historical centre is particularly interesting with its characteristic narrow streets which cross the village at various street levels. |
