CALA GONONE - GORROPU (51 km, difference in level dislivello 1500mt) OR CALA GONONE - CALA LUNA (24 km, difference in level dislivello 250mt)
Duration: 4/5 hours for Gorropu - 2/3 hours for Cala Luna
Position: Eastern Sardinia
Level of difficulty: medium level for Gorropu – easy level for Cala Luna
Ideal for: people who love mountain bikes and nature
FIRST STAGE: CALA GONONE-CODULA DI LUNA The Supramonte is an uncontaminated, wild and wonderful land. The route is full of charm since the beginning. Leave Cala Gonone and the sea and plunge into this extraordinary landscape. The concrete cartroad , running parallel to the Fuili Canyon, is a comfortable route from which you can enjoy all the surrounding shades. Basaltic rocks, Mediterranean scrub and strong scents given by this generous nature. We slowly go to wilder lands where foliage limits our view but makes us appreciate all things around us even more: real natural monuments, kindly offered by the mother goddess - Sardinia. Climbs can also be steep and arduous, mule tracks become steeper and more winding, but the thick forest and the heavenly environment will repay you of all our physical efforts. After Ghivine forest we will find the incredible Oddoene valley and the whole Supramonte orographic area. We will see the Majestic Gorropu, a good giant, a lovely canyon. The same route will offer us another gift: a beautiful, hard, breathtaking descent. The view is gratifying and relaxing, and should be enjoyed quietly. The perfect opportunity to take a break in the typical Sutta e Terra sheepfolds. Then it’s time to leave again along the route signaled by a natural arch. An exciting and psychedelic zigzag makes us forget time passing and suddenly we reach the SS 125. Asphalt, comfort, civilization. Words and signs that right now annoy us, but the granitic totems, the lavender, heather and broom bushes, will immediately comfort us. On the left we find the sign indicating the end of the first stage: the fantastic Codula di Luna. We are still in Heaven and can relax.
SECOND STAGE (OPTION 1): CODULA DI LUNA-CANYON DI GORROPU An old roadman’s house accurately indicates the entrance of our path: an exciting and sloping Sardinian route only for people who really love cycling. Roots, stones and sharp bends need the highest concentration and accurate riding. Nature can easily distract us, it’s impossible not to admire the strawberry trees and the Gorropu columbine. A perfect match of beauty and wild elegance will push us to have a break. Once we get our breath back we’ll have to leave again. We will sadly quit our wonderful calcareous path for other places. This path knows we are not shy tourists and it offers us, at frenzied pace, a gravel road, bottlenecks, irregular stone steps and many other surprises. In short, we have to be careful because our path is afraid we would look away from it to admire our mind-blowing destination: the Gorropu gorge. Millenniums didn’t heal the wound of the Supramonte between Orgosolo and Urzulei. This is because it is not a painful wound but a wound of love. The love for the amazement that the Gorropu canyon can arouse. Before the mouth of the gorge a thick wood follows us all along the Oddeone valley.
SECOND STAGE (OPTION 2): CODULA DI LUNA-CALA LUNA From the SS 125 we can choose to ride on effortless dirt roads along the charming natural arch of Badde Lupiru till Codula di Luna. The main road: a metaphorical arrow indicating the most beautiful beach in the world, Cala Luna. The Codula di Luna gorge is apparently hard to pass through, but at the end of it the most transparent waters of the Mediterranean sea are waiting for us. |

| Cala Gonone is about 7 km far from Dorgali, surrounded by mountains and big calcareous cliffs that. This area is full of wonderful creeks and isolated beaches, easily to reach only by boat. On the north there is the beach of Osalla, reachable by land and the suitable place for families thanks to the pinewood at its back. After Osalla there is the beach of Cartoe: its sand is surprisingly white and its waters blue and crystal-clear. On the south of Cala Gonone there is the small but beautiful Cala Fuili. |
