 | The name of Bonnanaro, an inland town in the province of Sassari, is largely linked to the important historical discoveries that have been made in the area. The tomb that was found in 1889 at “Korona Montana” allowed the discoverers to identify numerous characteristics of the warrior population that lived at the dawn of the nuragic civilisation and started the so-called “culture of Bonnanaro”; many archaeological remains of weapons have come down to us as well as some pieces of pottery, which were used for burial purposes and were very austere with no trace of decoration. |

 | The present day Bonnanaro grew up in the very heart of the Meilogu, on the slopes of Monte Pelao; it had an important strategic position for the ancient inhabitants of the island. It is a small centre (1,127 inhabitants) and the economy is based mainly on agriculture and sheep farming. A distinctive feature is the production of cherries; every year a cherry festival is held on the second Sunday in June. Wine is also produced very widely. It’s well worth visiting the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie on Monte Arana, which has recently been restored.
