Carbonia
Locations Sardinia CarboniaCarbonia is situated in the south-west of Sardinia and has a current population of 31,000 inhabitants. It was founded in 1938 in accordance with the wishes of Mussolini who wanted to promote the exploitation of the rich coal deposits in the area. From an architectural point of view, the layout of Carbonia is typical of Fascist towns: in the centre stands the Littoria Tower, which was meant to become the home of the Fascist Party, and the Church of San Ponziano, built in neo-Romanesque style using volcanic rock; it was opened on the day of the inauguration of the town.

Locations Sardinia CarboniaIn the town itself you can visit the historically important Museo Villa Sulcis, situated inside the renovated house of the same name, once the home of the Director of the mines. The Museum was opened in 1998 and has on display a number of archaeological finds dating back to the early Stone Age and Roman periods, found at various archaeological sites but principally at those around Carbonia and in particular from the Phoenician and Punic necropoli on Monte Sirai. Two famous private collections are also on display: the Doneddu collection and the Pispisa collection. The little church of Santa Maria in the outlying district of Flumentepido is also worth visiting: it was built in the 11th century in Romanesque style, is very simple in layout and still retains a significant part of the original fittings.
