The mild climate of Sardinia |
|
Sardinia has a maritime Mediterranean climate, stronger along the coastal strip, due to its insularity and to the small distance from sea of every part of its territory. It is temperate during all the year.
It naturally shows the effects of its geographical position (in the centre of Mediterranean sea). In fact, the Island is situated in the trajectory of tropical air masses coming from the African coasts on one side, and air masses carried by Western winds originate from the Atlantic Ocean on the other side. It is sporadically crossed by cold currents of air coming from the Artic.
Normally the North is more rainy than the South. In winter, the temperature is normally around 10° C in the coastal cities and a little bit lower in the inland area, while during the summer it can reach and exceed 30° C.
The summer tends to be more or less long depending on the year, but it is usually possible to spend a nice day at the beach (bath included) from April to October.

Winds |
|
A climate element of valuable significance is constituted by winds. Actually the island is crossed, during all the year, by winds coming from all directions.
The dominant wind during the winter season is the Mistral, a North-West wind. Along the coastal strips, protected by no mountains, the Maestrale has left indelible signs in the landscape. It eroded and modelled the rocks, and deformed the trees which assumed an inclined position towards South-East.
An other winter wind is Libeccio ( it blows from South-West ), which invests all the Western strip, going North beyond the Bocche di Bonifacio and South, along the Sulcis, till it reaches the Cagliari Gulf .
Moreover the Sirocco, a hot and originally dry wind, originates from African deserts , that while crossing the sea overloads on humidity, and when it invests Sardinia it carries humid air.
Levant is less frequent, it usually reaches the Eastern coast still fresh and enough humid.
Minor winds are the North wind and Grecale (East wind), either cool in summer or in winter. Rains, which have a sporadic and stormy character, are not a very frequent event, specially in the coastal zones .
