Discover the island: Economy

Breeding and Agriculture

Breeding and agriculture are still presently one of the key economic activities in the Sardinian economy, especially in mountain and hilly areas, and until the 70’s they absorbed the majority of the workforce of the island.

Traditional breeding include the Sardinian sheep (one of the world’s best for milk), mountain-goats and Montiferru red ox.

The milk and meat processing boosted a flourishing dairy industry and numerous ham factories producing pecorino cheese and sausages through old agropastoral techniques.

Like cereal growing, also olive and wine growing are relevant for agriculture, especially thanks to their high quality.

Fishing

Fishing is widespread in Alghero and along the Sulcis coasts and most of Sardinian fish comes from these areas accordingly.

Such activity is also relevant in Gallura, primarily in the area near Oristano where fishers work in wide pools and fish ponds.

Connected to the presence of ponds are the old salt pans of Cagliari, Sant’Antioco and Carlforte.

Also very important are Carloforte and Portoscuso tunas, which are exported worldwide, primarily in Japan.

Mines

The mines, presently under a heavy crisis, are widespread in the Sulcis-Iglesiente region. Coal mines were abandoned, while, by contrast, lead and zinc mines still survive, awaiting in vain a state intervention that would be critical to boosting an old and traditional economic activity for the population residing in the island’s South-West.

Probably only tourism and valorization of exceptional monuments of industrial archaeology left by the mining activities would lift the local economy.

Tertiary Sector

In Sardinia, the tertiary sector boomed, driven by the Internet and new technologies.

The region features one of Italy’s highest Internet user percentage and a high concentration of IT-related sites and activities.

Cagliari hosts Tiscali, one of the biggest Pan-European IT companies, which can still boast one of the most amazing debuts ever seen on Italy’s Stock Exchange in 1999.
