|
The barefoot people run less takes place on the first Sunday of September, in occasion of the San Salvatore Feast. A numerous group of barefooted youths weraing white costumes carry a statue on their shoulders through paths surrounded by bushes and fields for 12 km. This event dates back to 1619 and simulates the rescue of the statue kept in the church since the Moorish’s invasion. According to the legend the Barefoot people used bushes instead of the shoes, in order to frighten the invaders. This ploy contributed to save the simulacrum. The scenery of this feast is Cabras, a small town that lies on the Sinis peninsula, a plane sorrounded by ponds and hills sloping down to beautiful beaches.
