St. Efisio is the most important celebration in Cagliari, main city of Sardinia. On may, 1st the simulacrum of St. Efisio is placed over a golden chariot along the streets of the city, escorted by many faithful people and groups wearing traditional costumes. Since 1657, the city of Cagliari celebrates its patron, by mean of a princely procession where the image of the saint on a oxcart, leaves the Stampace’s quarter to get the suburb of Pula, 30 Km away, and then it comes back on the 4th of May followed by many observant some of whom barefooted. This celebration comes into being from a promise that the inhabitant s of Cagliari made with their patron for having rescued the city from a terrible pestilence. |
