Discover the island: Surroundings and Nature

A big variety of landscapes

Sardinia has risen out million of years ago but at the beginning it hadn’t the present form. According to the studies made, the studious agree by the time to assert that it rose out first the Sulcis-Iglesiente zone in the south-west part, followed by Nurra in the north-west area and all the oriental relief which goes from Gallura to Sarrabus.

The continue evolution of Sardinian landscape through the long geological ages has conduct to the creation of the big variety of mountains landscapes: schistose mountains, granite, calcareous-dolomite and old volcanoes. As for the rest of the territory, also the coastal border is particularly moved and differentiate. Extended sectors alternate low and sand coast with long and rocks coast which present several different aspects, like lsand beaches, very high dunes, so high that it can be considerate the “desert of Sardinia”, reefs sculpted by the “Maestrale”, calcareous cliffs, granite promontory, long volcanoes walls.

Moreover in Sardinia are present a big numerous of streams, which are torrents that flow rapidly in narrow deep gorges, closed by high rock faces and combined strips of great spectacularity to great beauty. With this large capacity of erosion, they can express in the short but intense period of flood, they model rocks with an infinity variety of forms. The charms of Sardinia is also therefore also in this reality made of many facets.

Wildlife

Thanks to its geomorphological features and mild climate, Sardinia is populated by a variety of local animal and vegetal species.

In Spring, you can fully enjoy this wildlife heritage that includes, as well as the typical Mediterranean Scrub, different types of oak especially in the area surrounding Tempio Pausania, which is particularly rich in these trees.

The most famous tree from which the berry juice is derived is the myrtle: hence, the popular liquor, which is one of the most widely known Sardinian products abroad.

There are also fragrant growths like lavender and rosemary, which characterize the surroundings with their sight and perfume.

Numerous pines border the beaches and picnic areas, offering relief from the heat.

There are also other distinctive animal species having different characteristics compared to those present in other regions, namely Sardinian wild boars, mouflons, the wild horses of Giara di Gesturi, the Sardinian stag of Arcosu Mount, in addition to a variety of birds that found in the island’s ponds their perfect habitat for rest and nest-building.

Flamingoes, for instance, have now bolstered their presence in the island thanks to the high concentration of salt in the ponds’ waters, which favors the presence of “artemia salina” (Saltwater Brine Shrimp), from which their pink color originates.

In addition to flamingoes, the blue sky of Sardinia also hosts different species of hawks and griffons.

The environmental heritage is completed by the parks and reserves of the island.
