Discover the island: Society

Strong and proud Sardinian People

Sardinians are strong, proud, attached to land and tradition, small in number, not in spirit.
Long isolation and a past marked by foreign dominations and invasions have left them friendly, yet a bit cold. However, after a first impact, they turn into a hospitable and generous people. Thus, for example, primarily in hamlets, you are often invited immediately to an event like a birth or marriage or simply to taste special, home-made food.
Indeed, due to harsh life conditions, traditional Sardinia puts strong emphasis on rituality and ceremonies such as baptisms, engagements, illness-deaths, identified as the key steps of the “life cycle”.

Ancient Arts and Crafts

The society revolves around the land, as evidenced by the presence of shepherds and farmers, the two main trades in the traditional sardinian world. Such occupations were not theoretically learned, but acquired from experience and long-matured cultural heritage, generating two different contrasting life styles.
Another key occupation in Sardinian society is the artisan, because the latter produces tools and equipment for peasant, pastoral and domestic work. Presently, this job has been highly revaluated, because its products are highly attractive during summer local fairs.
Farm-holding goods like equipment and saddles are augmented by typically feminine things like embroidery, weaving, baskets, packaging of bread and pastries, or particularly precious gold and leather objects - now also famous abroad and highly valued.

From Sacred to Profane

As in other Italian regions, Catholic faith is the predominant religion in Sardinia. There are many highly suggestive religious events such as Alghero’s Holy Week and Saint Ephesus’ Festival.
Besides these “religious rites”, there are other popular festivals, historically and anthropologically important, marked by the cycle of an old agropastoral economy. Though recently influenced by tourism and technical innovation, such festivals remain genuine and are still reminiscent of the past.
Still visible are some elements belonging to the local prehistoric cultures, to the Classical and Byzantine heritage and, mainly, to the spectacular and choreographic Spanish religiosity – in an extraordinary mix of sacred and profane.

Religious feasts and rural cults

Connected to the religious calendar of the Saints’ festivals and summer cycle of agricultural crop, rural festivals stay vital in Sardinia. To celebrate a special event, people leave their own hamlet and go to old country churches.
The Sardinian tradition of rural cults gave rise, especially in internal areas and, often, in inaccessible and lonely places, to a typical architectural style. Pilgrims often stay in lollas, cumbessias, muristenes (small houses) near the church. Whole families with furnishings move to the villages-sanctuaries in order to spend the period of Novena, as well as socializing intensively with people. The organizers are responsible for rule compliance during the festivals: in fact, daily routine is suppressed, the convivial and exchange rites unite with the devotion for the saint invoked: tradition (namely, food, games, singing and dancing) clashes with mass culture.
For those who are eager to get acquainted with the Sardinian people’s identity, its attachment to tradition and the desire to keep its own history and culture, attending these events is undoubtedly a unique experience. There are many (over 1000) antique celebrations
