Historical period: bronze age – iron age (1800/1000 BC)
If the afterlife exists, probably an entire population observes Sardinia and smiles.
This population is the nuragic population which observes people who try to interpret the Tombs of the Giants, the nuragic wells, the holy sources and the nuraghi.
Sardinia counts at least 8000 ancient towers made with stones; in the past it was possible to count 20000 constructions like these. We wonder why this advanced, civil and powerful population used to spend time building towers. We wonder if their aim was religious, military or if they used to build these constructions in order to live there. Maybe we will not be able to give an answer to these questions and this is why it seems that the nuragic people laugh from the afterlife. |

The nuraghi are unique. They are the biggest megalithic sights of Europe and most of them are also still well-preserved. The millennium have not solved all the doubts on the nuraghi’s existence.
In Sardinia you can find a nuraghe every 3 kms so it is hard to believe that the towers belonged to powerful shepherds or to the normal people. It is not possible that many powerful shepherds could live so close to each other and it is not possible that there were only 20000 “houses” on the isle. The nuragic people probably lived in the huts near the nuragic “royal palaces”. |

Probably these tholos constructions were military fortresses. This is maybe the reason why nuragic people (probably associated to the Shardana) used to build many towers on impassable areas like the Sardinian hills or coasts; however, many experts say that, apart from the Barumini village, the nuraghi were not suitable from a military point of view. |

The human being is fortunately an animal which does not give up easily. The nuragic doubts have not excited only the experts of archaeology but also simple lovers.
Many theories have pushed the experts to study the nuraghi also according to the cyclical events of the vault of heaven like the sunrise and the sunset, the lunar cycle, the equinox, the solstice and the strange correspondences with the rising of the Centaur-Crux constellations.
Among the most convincing theories there is the idea that the nuraghi were places of mother cult. Their structure could represent a mother’s womb with an opening that gives light, a light which could represent the man’s fertilizing force. This is one of the possibilities that explain the orientation of many nuraghi with the entrance located on the South/South-East. |

There are also other studies which confirm that The Shardana knew the megalithic yard: a unit of prehistoric measurement, used by the dolmen and megalithic circles builders.
There are several theories, all possible, probably because several were the uses of these constructions.
Maybe the nuraghi were used like houses or religious sights, linked to the vault of heaven and the death cult, but also like military fortresses which allowed the nuragic people to sight the enemies.
