In Santu Lussurgiu the Carnival is characterized by the traditional horse race named “Sa Carrela ‘e Nanti”, organized by a committee set up by the Circolo Ippico Lussurgese (horse club of Santu Lussurgiu), the Pro loco and with the cooperation of the municipal administration. “Sa Carrela” e’ Nanti” is the name of a dirt road which is located on the historical center of Santu Lussurgiu. The houses mark the boundary of the first descent, the plain and then the short slope which ends at the village’s exit to Bonacardo. The route is characterized by bends and narrow passages, which make the race unique and exciting.
On Sunday, at 15.30, the first horsemen (more or less 60 men from Santu Lussurgiu) reach the “iscappadorzu”: the place where the event starts. The horsemen have to show their equestrian skills, the bearing during the race and the horse’s composure during the winding route.
On Monday, it is celebrated the day of “Su Lunisi de sa pudda”: the horsemen take on their own one or more rag hens. The friends who does not participate to the race hang the hen that the horsemen knock down with a stick, from the string hanged transversally by the side of the road.
On Tuesday there is the final day of the event “Sa Carrela ‘e Nanti”. At the end of the equestrian event, a secret jury awards the three pairs, for the best masks shown during the three days and the first three pairs which on Monday have knocked down most of the rag hens.
