The Municipal Archaeological Museum of "Villa Sulcis" is located in the town of Carbonia, on the southwestern of Sardinia. It has opened in 1988 and gathers which materials come from different archaeological sites situated, a great many, in the municipal territory of Carbonia. Moreover the Museum offers a valued link with the ancient town of Monte Sirai. Founded by Phoenicians about 750 B.C. the town was occupied by Carthaginians in the 6th century B.C.; life went on peacefully between the new inhabitants and nuragic people till about 110 B.C. when the town was suddenly abandoned. Two important private collections, the Doneddu and Pispisa Collections, include interesting materials of the cultural events of the region Sulcis from the prehistory to the High Middle Ages. The importance of the Museum lies in the fact that these materials are the witness of the relationship between man and its territory during five millennia. In order to show their context, they are accompanied by explanatory "schede" and graphic recontructions. The Museum whose exposition rooms will be soon more than twice wide, sets itself as a promoting centre of didactic activities, concerning history and archaeology, with the help of audiovisuals and a multimedial system, which can offer a real virtual guided visit to the town of Monte Sirai, annual pottery laboratory. Winter opening time: 9.00 - 13.00 / 15.00 - 19.00 Summer opening time 9.00 - 13.00 / 16.00 - 20.00 (except Monday)
