The San Saturnino springs located in Benetutti, in a very good position in the heart of Sardinia, are particularly appreciated for the historical, naturalistic and cultural characteristics of the surrounding areas rich of nuragic and archaeological sites, remarkable churches and artisan shops. It is still possible to visit the rests of the buildings of the San Saturnino thermal baths which were known as Aquae Lesitanae. They were mentioned by the geographer Tolomeo who stated that the water gushed out from 110 springs. The springs were probably used in the nuragic age as the little church built in this site during the 12th century rose on the rests of a pre-existing prehistoric structure. The springs have been used all over the years; each of them keeps its traditional name which corresponds to the part of the body that every spring was supposed to recover (some examples in the Sardinian language: fonti de su anzu, de sa conca, de sos nervios / spring of the face, head and nerves) . A legend tells that, because of the benefits of the thermal treatments, the local doctors lost their patients and decided to destroy the stones near the springs where the healable illnesses were indicated. The salutary sulphureous waters, with a particular smell of sulphur, gush out from the clayey ground at a temperature of 40 degrees. They are used in the thermal establishment for beauty purposes but also for the treatment of different diseases. Information: www.goceano.it |
