Fordongianus’ thermal baths Fordongianus OR [Oristano]

The majestic thermal complex of Fordongianus is developed around a big rectangular swimming pool and it offers to the visitors an exciting view, rich of history and culture. The water gushes out from a canal with an opening similar to a lion’s head, at a temperature of 54 degrees. Near the sulphureous springs of Fordongianus, characterized by the presence of hot waters rich of therapeutic properties, there was the Roman Republican village of Aquae Ypsitane which was an important ancient thermal centre and a military fortress against the local populations opposed to the Roman supremacy. It is possible to see secondary baths, the rests of an arcade bordering the swimming pool, it is possible also to see the frigidarium with two baths, the tepidarium ad the calidarium which dates back to the 3rd century A.C. They were used for cold/tepid or hot baths. On the opening it is possible to see the monumental stairs and an impressive building (an inn or a market) which has rooms keeping evident tracks of frescos with figures representing red and brown horses and ornamental drawings. It is also interesting to visit the wells, tanks and canals used to store and distribute the waters.
