EU citizens can come with expatriate ID.
Should they come from countries where this kind of paper is not valid, they need to have a passport.
If coming from Countries joining the Schengen treaty (EU except GB, Ireland, Norway, Iceland) your passport will not be stamped, thus you should apply for the stamp if your trip is for study purposes or for a very long stay, because in that case you need it for a visa. |

For car rental, bring your driving license. In case of loss or theft, inform Italian authorities and report to the nearest Embassy or consulate. We also recommend the use of photocopies or noting important data from documents, e.g. ID number. |
